I finally dragged myself to see a dentist today, and to my surprise, I discovered that my gag reflex (that can usually deal with non-trivial throat pounding) was strongly activated by a small device that I was instructed to bite onto to get x-rays. “What the hell is going on here?” I contemplated, searching my neuroscience memory banks. I realized: It’s all about context.

Dom Dentist?

Plenty of research around pain shows that the same stimulus can be perceived differently under different contexts. Our brain’s top-down predictions play a huge role in creating our reality. Fear and loss of agency are large…

Psychedelics are becoming a hot topic and I keep seeing educational courses pop up, for therapists, MD’s or party goers. The psychedelic ecosystem right now is extremely unregulated and as someone who has a scientific background and works in the industry I want to help make sure people are getting correct information from reputable sources.

I was especially annoyed when a site some friends recommended offered free psychedelic safety education in return for my email. This seemed fishy to me, why ask for private data if all you are trying to do is educate the public with free info? Indeed…

Despite my aversion to nonscientific thinking and stories about the after life so many friends told me I should still watch Soul, the new Pixar movies. The visuals were stunning, straight out of trippy brains, literally showing you different perspective of space. However, I kept fantasizing the story would be more of a continuation of, Inside Out. What if Soul would be based on some actual neuroscience?

The following will have some movie spoilers.

What if the movie was based on neuroscine?

In my fantasy Souls start pretty similar but when Joe falls down instead of waking up into “the great beyond” he wakes up into “the great…

I have a long and winding path with meditation. I’ve practiced martial arts and meditation since the age of 12, but it was only while studying for a Master’s in Cognitive Neuroscience when I understood what my meditation teachers were telling me; The key was to understand the Predictive Coding Framework.

When I was told “focus on your breath”, my over sensitive bottom up signals would get amplified and send even more prediction error to higher level parts of the cortex that would then try to predict every little muscle twitch. I was getting a classic case of the centipede's…

There is a lot to be said about Netflix’s new documentary, “The Social Dilemma”, which combines interviews with engineers and designers who built our social platforms and an invented story about a family in today’s America. While some of the invented story and the way it depicted AI algorithms seem exaggerated to me, the basic problem showcased is a very real one.

There is a misalignment between our needs and the needs of the companies creating the social networks we use.

The advertising monetization model is at the heart of the problem. This model turns us, the people using the…

Right around when Covid started being a thing one of my partners broke an agreement we had around Covid safety. When I brought this up with him he immediately apologized and took full responsibility. Together we analyzed what happened in his brain noticing things like self-regulatory fatigue, a phenomenon that happens after inhibiting one self for too long, along with the difficulty of creating a new type of boundary and not wanting to offend the other person involved. We practiced what would he have done if the situation happened again so I could feel safe that the wanted response was…

I just finished binge watching “Years and Years”, a thought provoking BBC mini series that follows a British family for 15 years starting in 2019. I started watching it because some of the technology predictions around augmented reality seemed on point. The writer, Russell T Davies (Queer as folk, Dr. who), even managed to predict the pandemic (although in the show it happens in 2029). This is a binge worthy show that tackles hard core questions about politics, immigration laws, capitalism, gender issues and fake news. However, the one issue the show doesn’t question is monogamy.

Spoiler alert! Early on…

EmpowHER VR, one of the projects I’ve been most excited to work on is finally being offered to the world just in time for women’s month and just in time to help us feel empowered even in these crazy times we live in. I’d like to share the story of how it came to be.

I met Neilda Pacquing at a VR meetup two years ago. She was giving a talk about her path into VR and mentioned that she is trying to create VR safety training specifically designed to empower women and give them self-defense tools.

Besides being a…

Sounds impossible I know, but it’s not. For this women’s day I’ve decided to be brave and share with you why I’m coding (and acting in) my own interactive VR porn apps and why you can get (some of) the content even if you don’t have VR. Ready?

You can also join a live Twitch stream this Sunday 11:00 PST. I will be going through some code and the ideas behind specific XtraSexyReality experiences. I sort of want to do it topless in my PJ’s like I usually code. Would love feedback on what you think of that idea?

In today’s tale about what its like to be a female presenting entrepreneur I wanted to share a small story that happened last week. I was at a networking lunch bringing together many investors and entrepreneurs. There were some pretty big names in the invite only event and I saw this as a great opportunity to find a few more meeting for my upcoming fundraising process which is officially starting on the 7th of January.

The gender balance was pretty horrendous. I’d estimate around 15% female presenting humans in the crowd but unfortunately that’s not something unheard of in silicon…
